The Jackson Hill school (Monroe No. 8) was built in the 1880s and closed in 1954. It was named after the 1880s landowner, James Monroe Jackson, who donated the plot for the school to be built. At one point after the 1930s it was moved to a nearby farm site to serve as a voting hall for elections. When the community outgrew the gathering place, it was used for storage until 1992 when the Ringgold County Historical Society moved it to the Ringgold County Fairgrounds on the northern edge of Mount Ayr. As of 2024 the historical society operates it as a museum that is open either during the fair or by appointment.
