Elaine attended two country schools during her lifetime throughout the 1950s. The first was Pleasant #5 near Decorah, Iowa and then she moved to Locust School (also known as Pleasant #3), which is 10 miles northeast of Decorah in Winneshiek County. The Locust Schoolhouse currently stands as a preserved schoolhouse, maintained through the Winneshiek Historical Society and Silos and Smokestacks Heritage Foundation.
